Roots and Shoots was founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall. The organization has since branched nationally and internationally with more than 8000 groups in 96 countries.
The main purpose of Roots and Shoots is to actively develop awareness and foster communications about three main elements: animals, the environment, and the human community. As such, the grass-roots program emphasizes community, peace, and equality. Our UC Berkeley extension of the Roots and Shoots program hopes to uphold the same goals and aspirations. Our program hopes to work in conjunction with Emerson Middle School in such activities as: teaching after-school classes on animals to youth, volunteering at animal shelters, planting trees, and painting murals.
